Tipping the Scales: The Resilience Game
Watch this video: Key Concepts: Resilience
to learn more about the science of resilience. We will all face adversity in life. But will your community thrive?
Or dive? It depends on the choices we make! |
Play the " RESILIENCE Game"!In this interactive feature, you will learn how the choices we make can help children and the community as a whole become more resilient in the face of serious challenges. Negative events can occur at any moment, and it’s your job to choose positive events to counteract these negatives.
Choose carefully—you only have 20 ‘Resilience Bucks’ to spend. Certain positives will better counteract certain negatives and have a greater positive effect on children in the community. Your goal is to tip as many children’s scales as possible toward positive outcomes. Clicking on a child’s scale will give you a more detailed look at their history, scale balance, and the placement of their fulcrum. The positive experiences you choose will alter both the scale and the fulcrum’s position—shaping the outcomes of children and the community. |
stories of success: Bridges Out of Poverty
Over 150 community members representing multiple sectors attended Bridges out of Poverty, a two-day symposium about poverty and what perpetuates this condition. The event was based on Dr. Ruby Payne’s work and books, A Framework for Understanding Poverty and the follow up, Bridges out of Poverty: Strategies for Professionals and Communities.
Many participants reported having a better understanding of the mental models of the social classes and how these drive decision-making. For example, participants acknowledged they plan to alter the lens through which they view people living in poverty and analyze the environment rather than applying the middle class perspective to the situation.
It is intended this event will be a springboard to further planning in the LHNC priority area two: addressing the social determinants of health. This event was made possible through a grant from the United Way and the generous support from St. Josephs/QVMC Community Outreach, St. Helena Hospital, Kaiser, Rise Together, and Peter A. and Vernice H. Gasser Foundation.
